Douglass hat trick helps Titans take WBL opener

GLANDORF – Junior forward Bri Douglass netted a first half hat trick on Tuesday night against visiting Wapak as the Titans raced to a 6-0 victory to kick off Western Buckeye League play.

Douglass scored 15 goals a season ago and entered Tuesday evening’s tilt with just a single marker in her first three contests but wasted no time against Wapak and she snagged a pass and sent a screamer past Redskins keeper Maddison Springer with 34:00 remaining in the opening half to put OG on top 1-0.

Continuing to pressure the Wapak ballhandlers the Titans again quickly turned defense into offense with 31:15 as senior Clara Beach notched her first goal of the campaign to put the blue and gold up 2-0.

Ottawa Glandorf continued to pepper Springer with shots but were unable to add to their total as the Wapak keeper snagged a handful of saves as part of her 13 on the night. Unfortunately for the Redskins the Titans would eventually add to their total just three minutes after the Beach score when Douglass tossed in her second of the half with 28:49 to take a 3-0 advantage.

Showing 23:31 on the scoreboard the Titans upped the score to 4-0 thanks to Douglass who snared a lead from a teammate and raced a shot through the corner of the net to complete her personal hat trick.

The final score of the first half for the Titans came with 13:18 before the whistle courtesy of junior striker Myka Aldrich who kicked in her third of the season and 36th of her career to push the mark to 5-0.

A much slower contest on the scoreboard with each team controlling the ball for larger portions dominated the second half of play along with spectacular saves by Springer that included a penalty kick by the Titans.

With 5:11 remaining in the second half Ottawa Glandorf punched in the final tally of the contest, a shot by Clara Beach for her second goal of the evening that was assisted by Mackenzie Recker.

Wapak (1-3, 0-1), who will next battle WBL rival St. Marys on September 6th finished with just a single shot on goal that was stopped by Titan keeper Elli McCrate and were out shot on the evening 24-1.

Redskins keeper Maddison Springer turned away 15 OG shots between the pipes.

Ottawa Glandorf (2-1-1, 1-0) heads to Findlay on Saturday afternoon to battle non-league foe Liberty Benton with a 3pm kickoff that will be broadcast live on WZOQ Radio.

“Tonight was a good first WBL game and a building block for us moving forward. It’s always important to start the league off the right way and the girls found a way tonight to do that. Bri Douglass had a great game and made the most of her scoring opportunities in the first half when they came. Bri had a first half hat trick that and created chances for others in a variety of ways as well. As a team we have areas still that we want to improve on and I am looking forward to working on that at practice” said OG second year head coach Michelle Maag after the Titan victory.
