Weis grounds Flyer attack

MARIA STEIN – Sophomore pitcher Andrew Weis tossed a 2-hit shutout on Saturday as the Miller City Wildcats defeated host Marion Local 1-0 on Saturday morning.

Weis, making his fourth start and ninth appearance on the season found himself in trouble in the third inning after allowing a lead-off double to Derek Knapke and a two out walk to opposing pitcher Ian Rindler but wiggled off the hook thanks to a diving highlight level catch from teammate and brother Thomas Weis for the third out.

Despite hitting and walking a runner in the fourth Weis worked himself out of the last piece of trouble he would face on the day with consecutive strikeouts to keep his slate clean.

Marion Local starter Ian Rindler worked around a bases loaded situation in the second inning and a pair of runners in the second and third but was unable to skirt disaster in the fourth.

Moments after his run saving catch in center, Thomas Weis led off the top of the fourth for the Wildcats with a single and was quickly moved over to third on an error and a fielders choice play.

Sophomore Carter Niese brought Weis around to score against Rindler on a sacrifice bunt to push the visitors ahead 1-0.

After allowing a single with one out in the fifth to Griffin Bruns, Wise sat down the final eight hitters he faced on the day to secure the victory.

“I’m really proud of the guys coming out to play with energy today after an early morning bus ride. We made a couple of key plays in key situations to get out of a few innings” said Miller City head coach Dusty Pester.

Andrew Weis improved his record to 4-0 on the season with a complete game three hit shutout that saw him fan seven opposing batter while walking two and hitting one.

“Andrew was really good today. His brother Tommy made a great play in center but he just seemed to get better as the game went on and he pitched an outstanding game for us” Pester remarked after the game.

Marion Local sees their record fall to 7-12 on the season and will next be in action on Monday when they travel to KC Geiger Park for a non-league tilt against St Marys. The Flyers will remain on the road throughout the week to close their regular season as they visit Russia, Versailles, and Celina.

Ian Rindler (1-3) suffered the loss for the Flyers as he tossed four innings while allowing two hits and striking out two and surrendering the lone run of the game. Unfortunately for Rindler his first three innings saw the lead runner reach on an error as well.

Miller City improves to 12-9 with their second 1-0 win in as many days and will travel for five games in six days beginning with a Monday evening trip to Ayersville.
