Ottawa Glandorf races past Wapakoneta for WBL win

WAPAKONETA – Wapakoneta might be nicknamed the “Moon City,” but on Thursday night it was the visiting O-G Lady Titans who blasted off on their way to a 62-18 WBL victory.

Junior Liv Grothause caught flight first for the visiting Titans (6-0, 3-0) as she notched the first six points of a 24-point frame for O-G.

“Liv set the tone by scoring the first six points,” said Titan head coach Troy Yant.

Gracie Lammers (career high eight points), and Kaitlyn Kimmet knocked down a pair of long triples for Ottawa Glandorf in the period as they amassed an 11-0 advantage in the first two plus minutes of the game.

Wapak (3-5, 1-2) sophomore Kenzy Fullenkamp matched her season output of five points per contest in the opening stanza by scoring all five for the Redskins.

“I thought our starting five came out tonight and set the tone early,” said Yant. “They played really well as a unit, and Kimmet seemed to be very focused on both ends of the floor.”

Kimmet ran wild for the Titans on the scoreboard in the second quarter as she tallied a pair of shots from behind the arc and nine of her career high tying 17 points to help run the lead to 43-6 at the break.

Held to just one point in the second quarter on a free throw by Dylan Paul, Wapak ended a drought from the field of over 11 minutes of game action with a long two-point goal by Audrey Welsch.

Welsch struck twice for the host Redskins in the second quarter to bring the team within 48-11 before O-G triples from Lammers and Kimmet helped the Titans push ahead 53-13 heading to the fourth.

Sophomore guard Calverie Fox hit all three of her free throws in the final minutes, including the last shot of the game after the horn had sounded to secure the victory. Freshman guard Ava Masters scored her first and second career field goals at the varsity level during the running clock portion of the game in the second half, and finished with a career high six markers.

“We got Greta Leibrecht back today and that seemed to help our rotations and to get us back to playing full court man to man while generating some defensive pressure,” said Yant. “I was really happy overall with our top eight rotations, and the bench was able to play the fourth quarter. Ava Masters made the most of her first varsity minutes on the floor tonight.”

Wapak returns to action on Saturday morning when they host unbeaten St. Henry in a non-league clash. Ottawa Glandorf is off until December 28th as they welcome Crestview to the Supreme Court for a non-conference tilt.
