Kalida scratches past Miller City

MILLER CITY – This years “Battle of the Wildcats” on the pitch came down to just one goal for Kalida as they took down rival Miller City 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

Both head coach Mark Czubik of Kalida and Kevin Deitering found themselves both elated and depressed throughout the course of the Putnam County League battle as the others team both gave their own chances to take control of the game and kept them from being able to do just that over the course of 80 minutes of play.

Though each team controlled the ball and worked deep into opponent territory, only a handful of shots found their way near the opponents goal keeper.

One of those shots, a strike from Kalida sophomore Drew Fersch with 25:29 left in the first half would represent the only goal of the fast paced and physical matchup.

Miller City keeper Joe Deitering and Kalida’s Brady Fersch were mostly relegated to handling the occasional through ball or errant pass during the contest as their defenses would keep the opposition mostly in check once they reached the box.

When the final whistle sounded for the end of play Kalida had secured a 1-0 victory and their sixth straight victory in the series. Kalida has gone unbeaten in their last nine meetings with Miller City at 8-0-1 dating back to the last time they were defeated by Miller City back in 2011.

Miller City falls to 4-2-1 on the season and 0-2 in Putnam County League play and will next host Fort Jennings on Friday at 5 P.M. while Kalida moves to 4-4-1 overall and 2-0 in PCL contests, they will next host Pettisville on Friday evening at 7 P.M. in a non-league affair.
