MIDDLE POINT – Lincolnview’s Garrett Richardson scored a game high 29 points on Saturday night to lead the Lancers past Fort Jennings in a non-league affair 60-47.
Senior guard Landon Price started the scoring for the hosts by drilling a three point goal from the wing to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead and was joined by the first from Richardson moments for a 5-0 advantage and a Musketeer timeout.
Carson Fox splashed home a triple to give Lincolnview an 8-0 lead before the visitors dented the scoreboard for the first time on a triple of their own from freshman standout Jarron Swick with 4:16 remaining in the opening stanza.
Though the Musketeers pulled within 13-10 with 1:45 in the quarter on baskets by Swick and classmate Ian Howbert it would be the Lancers who finished the period with a flurry to take a 21-10 lead into the first stoppage behind Richardson who tossed in a shot at the buzzer to finish off an 11 point period.
Six second quarter points by Richardson and a team effort at the free throw line of 9 of 11 pushed the Lincolnview lead to 16 at the halftime break that was once cut to just eight on a basket from senior Jon Grote with 2:02 during a Musketeer rally.
Fort Jennings physical defense and transition offense led a chase in the scoreboard in the third period that saw the Musketeers outscore their hosts 13-8 led by Grote, Howbert, and Swick who trimmed the lead to 40-33 with 1:19 when he knocked down his third triple of the first half.
Richardson led the Lancers first half efforts with 17 points and pushed in another six of the eight of his teams markers for a 44-33 lead at the end of the third.
Nick Trentman finished the final eight minutes by draining a three pointer and a fast break bucket for Fort Jennings but was unable to keep Richardson off of the free throw line where he connected on six of eight tosses. Landon Price’s basket and free throw late in the period helped to secure the blue and gold 60-47 victory that saw he and Richardson knock down 7 of 9 charity tosses.
Fort Jennings (1-6) was led in scoring by Jarron Swick’s 14 points. Next up for the Musketeers is a Tuesday night tilt with Temple Christian.
Lincolnview moves to 2-3 on the season and stops a three game skid paced by Richardson’s 29 and will return to action Wednesday evening when they travel to Kalida to battle the Wildcats.
Lancer boss Brett Hammons said after the game “I thought our kids battled hard tonight. I’m extremely please with Garrett and how he played, he stepped up big for us tonight and make some key plays down the stretch. It was great to see him down the stretch knock down those free throws, I couldn’t be more proud of his and the rest of the guys effort on both ends of the floor.”
