Mustangs gallop past Bulldogs

HARROD – Monday night in Harrod the host Allen East Mustangs started fast out of the blocks and galloped past visiting Celina 62-35.

“Savana (Brooks) got going early, she knocked down a three on the first play and that kind of kick started her and our offense” said Allen East head coach Aaron Montgomery.

Brooks led all scorers on the evening for the Mustangs (12-2) with 22 points while nabbing four makes from behind the arc along the way.

Allen East added to the triple from their senior guard with one by Rilynn Jones and a pair of makes from Soraya Jackson that kickstarted a 16-0 lead and an eventual 20-3 first quarter score.

“I thought we came out strong tonight scoring 20 in the first quarter. Before the game in the locker room we talked about tonight being a trap game after beating Crestview but I was proud of our effort tonight” said Montgomery.

Held to just a single make in the first period, a triple from Brinley Korte with 1:27 to go, the Bulldogs found themselves with five players denting the scoreboard including Korte herself in the second.

Three pointers from both sides sliced the bottom half of the net in the second eight minute span and sent the hosts ahead into the locker room leading 37-18.

“Celina came out and got maybe a little rattled early but once they settled down they did a lot of good things that forced us to make adjustments. Their zone and switching in and out of it to man really made us slow down in the half court to get out sets arranged” remarked Montgomery.

Savana Brooks finished off her 22-point evening in the third stanza for the Mustangs with a bang by canning a pair of deep three pointers and adding a jumper from inside the arc while helping to hold the visitors to just a pair of makes defensively.

“Savana will tell you she’s been in a slump but I don’t believe in those. She’s been getting some great looked the last handful of games but they just weren’t falling at a rate she’d like them to. Rilynn (Jordan) did a great job penetrating and allowing her to spot up and get some space while Soraya Jackson and Taylor Nickles gave us some good looks at the rim as well” stated Montgomery.

Brinley Korte pushed the pace for the Bulldogs (6-10) in the fourth quarter with her second three point goal and a layup to finish off her 10 markers while accounting for two of the teams three makes from the field. Three baskets, all triples from the hands of Jordan and Ella Miller for the Mustangs filled out the final score of 62-35 as the buzzer sounded.

Celina was led in scoring by Rachel Rammel’s 11 point effort and will next be in action in Western Buckeye League play on Thursday when they travel to Lima to battle Bath.

Allen East remains unbeaten at home this season but finds themselves on the road Tuesday night as they tangle with Tinora in a game broadcast live at 7pm on https://www.youtube.com/@tinoraramslive/streams
