3rd annual MLK Classic set for Sunday

FORT LORAMIE – The 3rd annual MLK Classic will take place this coming Sunday starting at noon with 12 of the top area teams in action across six games.

Host Fort Loramie will kick off the games as they welcome in Mohawk. Mohawk currently sports a 6-4 record out of the Northern 10 Conference while the Redskins stand at 3-7 under first year head coach Mitch Westerheide.

Game two scheduled for 1:30pm will feature St. Marys, off to a 7-2 start and a battle 48 hours previous with Ottawa Glandorf representing the Western Buckeye League taking on Dublin Jerome of the Ohio Capital Conference.

Seniors Evan Angstmann and Jace Turner, both standing 6’7 lead the Roughriders with a combined nearly 40 points per game for head coach Dan Hegemier who just recently earned his 600th career victory.

The events third game at 3pm matches Marion Local (3-5) playing their third game in as many days out of the MAC taking on Tri-Village (10-1), the #6 team in the state in division 3. Tri-Village is led by 6’2 sophomore standout Trey Sagester who is averaging nearly 23 points per game and garnering multiple D1 looks. Head coach Kurt Goettemoeller’s Flyers feature 1st team MAC and D8 selection Jack Knapke, a 6’9 senior who is looked at as one of the best players in his class in the state.

A pair of state ranked in D4 tangle in the fourth game of the event when #2 Russia (11-0) meets 12th ranked Antwerp (10-0) at 4:30pm. Antwerp standout seniors Carson Altimus (12.5 ppg, 7.5 reb) and classmate Landon Brewer, the reigning Green Meadows Conference and District 8 Player of the year (21 ppg, 10.4 reb) take on 1,000 point scorer Hayden Quinter and D1 baseball signee Braylon Cordonnier (6’4 junior).

Sunday evening’s penultimate game at 6pm features the Minster Wildcats (3-4) of Mike McClurg battling the Toledo Christian Eagles (8-1) in a MAC vs TAAC showcase. 6’8 skilled big man Cole Albers leads Minster, while Toledo Christian features first team TAAC junior Karter Koester (17.3 ppg) and senior Honorable Mention All-Ohioan Kalon Butler (16ppg).

Senior Trey Heitkamp (12.7 ppg, 5.7 reb) leads the SCAL’s Anna Rockets (5-6) into Fort Loramie on Sunday evening at 7:30 pm to oppose the Arlington Red Devils (6-4) of the Blanchard Valley Conference. Jase Vermillion scores 13.9 ppg for the Red Devils and is sixth in the BVC in scoring for head coach Jason Vermillion. Arlington will be playing their first game in nine days.

All tickets will be $15 at the gate for the event that will also feature the schools junior varsity squads squaring off in the junior high gymnasium throughout the day.
