Spencerville boys 2020-21 season preview

SPENCERVILLE – Though last season didn’t go the way Spencerville would have liked, things are looking up for 2020-21.

When the season kicks off on Friday, November 27th the Bearcats will feature a lineup that includes four returning starters in the quartet of seniors Keegan Goecke and Dalton Prichard, junior Tyler Koenig, and sharpshooting freshman Josh Henline.

Bearcat mentor Kevin Sensabaugh’s outlook for this season notes that “We were dealt a tough blow with the loss of returning starter
and third year varsity player Eli Harter, who suffered a season ending injury during football. However, we still have a lot of guys returning from last year’s squad. Seniors Keegan Goecke, Dalton Prichard, and DJ Bowens return from last year. Senior Isaiah Pugh will rejoin the program as well. Junior point guard Tyler Koenig returns to give us some experience at the point guard position. Sophomore Josh Henline returns after an outstanding freshman year in which he was our leading scorer. We will rely heavily on those guys for leadership this season.”

Sensabaugh is entering his 19th season at the helm of his alma mater and sports a 225-179 record after a 7-16 2019-20 campaign that saw his troops finish at 3-5 in the Northwest Conference.

Last season the Bearcats ended their year with a sectional semi-finals loss to USV but Sensabaugh says this year could be a turning point as “almost everyone that will play for us this year played last year and/or played varsity football so we do have some experience.”

Looking at the NWC race for the upcoming season the Bearcat boss tabbed Columbus Grove as the team to beat but says “Crestview has a Division 1 college commit (Ohio State commit Kalen Etzler) on their roster, so they will be tough as well as Lincolnview who has every player back from a solid squad last year.”

Assisting Sensabaugh with the coaching duties will be returning varsity assistant Matt Goecke while the JV will be headed by Derek Goecke, and the freshman team by Josiah Stober.

Spencerville’s season sees the Bearcats open at home with St. Henry before hitting the road for a Saturday night contest at Minster.
