Titans fend off Big Green

OTTOVILLE – Tuesday night at L.W. Heckman Gymnasium Ottawa Glandorf jumped back on the winning track as they downed host Ottoville 50-35 in non-league action.

Fast break baskets off of opponent turnovers, a staple of the Titans attack paced the first quarter on the scoreboard for the visitors who jumped out to a 10-7 lead at the end of the opening eight minutes.

Held without a basket for over six minutes between makes from Erica Thorbahn and Elise Kramer in the first, Ottoville pulled within 22-17 just before the halftime break to put a stop to a two minute drought when freshman Carly Thorbahn stuck back a shot just in front of the buzzer.

Ottawa Glandorf utilized balanced scoring in the first half while committing 12 turnovers on the offensive end as seven players reached the scoring column led by Erin and Katie Kaufman each with four markers.

Ottoville’s struggle with turnovers continued in a fast paced third quarter of action between the two teams and stymied the scoring to a single basket and a quartet of free throws from Becca Turnwald and Carly Thorbahn through the first seven plus minutes.

Two three point goals by Lily Haselman and Kaitlyn Kimmet kept the Titans ahead by double digits until just before the quarter break as a three quarter court shot from Carly Thorbahn split the net in half on the other end of the floor to trim the deficit to 35-26 heading to the fourth stanza.

Maggie Verhoff, fresh off of a 5/7 performance from beyond the arc during a Saturday loss to Tri-Valley connected on two triples in the early moments of the final quarter to push her squad back on top by double digits.

Free throws from Carly Thorbahn and baskets by Elise Kramer kept the Big Green afloat late in the game before the final make of the game came from freshman Jocelyn Langhals to end the night at 50-35 Ottawa Glandorf.

Third year Ottoville head coach Michelle Leach said after the game “Their defensive pressure was tenacious which forced a lot of turnovers that led to transition points. I was extremely proud of how our girls battled, especially in the post. I also thought our girls did a great job staying mentally and physically engaged throughout the entire game against a quality team like OG”.

Ottoville falls to 7-9 on the season and will next be back in action Thursday when they host rival Fort Jennings in Putnam County League play. Carly Thorbahn led the Big Green attack with 12 points on the evening.

Ottawa Glandorf moves to 10-4 and will travel to Van Wert on Thursday looking to remain unbeaten in Western Buckeye League play. The Titans duo of Erin and Katie Kaufman each tossed in nine points to lead nine blue and gold scorers.
