METAMORA – Ottawa Glandorf is headed back to the regionals for the third straight year as they defeated Delta Saturday afternoon 3-0 to claim the Evergreen district championship.
“It was a hard fought game tonight against a tough Delta squad” said OG head coach Michelle Maag.
Things started slower than usual for the Titans in the first half as a defensive battle with the Panthers kept the blue and gold off of the scoreboard despite a handful of would be chances.
OG finally broke through on the scoreboard with 6:02 remaining in the opening half when junior standout Makenna Siefker crossed over a defender and lofted a 20 yard shot to the top corner of the net with her left foot to put the Titans up 1-0.
Shots to up the lead in the early portion of the second half from Siefker and senior teammate Bri Douglass were stopped by Delta keeper Ryllie Taylor to keep the contest at 1-0.
Working off of a Douglass corner kick with 27:44 to go the Titans notched their second goal thanks to a high cross that senior Myka Aldrich bounced past Taylor with her right foot for her 21st marker of the year.
Ottawa Glandorf’s final goal of the game saw junior forward Maya Heringhaus push a pass through the Panthers defense to the top of the box where Siefker worked her magic from 15 yards away off the hands of Taylor to run the lead to 3-0 with 22:47 remaining.
“In the second half I thought we moved the ball better and opened up some space to attack. We kept attacking with our constant pressure and found a few good finishes while using a good defensive effort to limit the Delta scoring opportunities” opined Maag.
Delta sees their season come to and end with a 13-5-1 record and a district runner up while the #2 ranked Titans improve to 19-1 on the season behind the 17th shutout of the season for sophomore keeper Karsyn Erford.
Next up for Ottawa Glandorf is a Tuesday night trip to Shawnee for a Halloween matchup with Riverdale, 1-0 winners over Bluffton in their own district final on Saturday.
“We have a resilient Riverdale squad up next. Our focus will be on making sure we are well prepared for that matchup on Tuesday” finished Maag on what lies ahead for OG.
