Titans claim 2nd straight WBL crown

LIMA – Ottawa Glandorf wrapped up their 2nd straight Western Buckeye League championship and sixth title overall on Tuesday night on the road in Lima as they downed host Shawnee 3-0.

Last time OG suffered a conference setback was a 1-0 loss on Sept 30th, 2021 on the same field they were victorious this time around. Since that loss the Titans are riding a 20-game conference winning streak and have outscored opponents by a 140-1 margin.

Facing a tough Shawnee defense prepared to slow down the high octane runs they are used to the Titans on this night found their first goal 11 minutes in when a left footed shot from junior standout Makenna Siefker reached the top left corner.

Leading 1-0 late in the first half Ottawa Glandorf was able to notch a second tally on the scoreboard on a cross from sophomore midfielder Liv Grothause who found the waiting foot of teammate Bri Douglass who danced through defenders before finding the back of the net at 7:52.

Trading runs and utilizing their defensive speed in the second half to prevent the opponent from scoring each team had their chances to cut into the lead but found the duo of Karsyn Erford (OG) and Chloe Nance (Shawnee) up to the task of keeping balls out of the net.

In the final moments of the contest the Titans again turned to Grothause who flipped a cross to Delaney Duling who deposited it for her sixth marker of the season with just 11.6 seconds remaining to secure the 3-0 victory.

“Offensively we found a way to punch a couple of goals in during the first half. I thought we moved the ball better in the second half but it took until the very end of the second half to find the last goal” remarked Ottawa Glandorf head coach Michelle Maag. “Defensively we had moments of great defensive pressure from all of our lines. We will look to increase that as we finish off the regular season.”

Tonight’s win for OG marked the first time since Sept 17th 2015 that the blue and gold walked out of Shawnee Stadium as winners.

“It was a tough battle with Shawnee tonight. They tested us in some ways we hadn’t seen yet this year so that’s a great experience for us to build off moving forward” said Maag.

Shawnee (4-4-6, 3-2-3) will return to action on Tuesday night when they finish up WBL play by hosting Kenton.

Ottawa Glandorf (14-0, 8-0), ranked #1 in the OSSCA polls for the first time in school history this week will be back at it on Thursday evening hosting Kalida in a 7:15pm varsity only tilt at the OG football field and celebrating the careers of their senior class.

“Winning the WBL is always so tough, and that was true tonight and for all of our other league games this year. We are very proud of the girls for back to back titles for the first time in school history and all the work it took to get there. We still have a game left in the league though and we want to end conference play on a high note. We’re excited to keep getting better every day” finished Maag on her thoughts on the win.
